I would like this play to be INCLUSIVE. I have no idea if this is a term used within theatre, but I have decided that what I would like to try to create is a piece of theatre that caters to mainstream but is accessible for SEN/ autistic and possible PMLD audiences. I believe all audiences should be able to access theatre and story and I suspect that mainstream audiences would benefit from the the kinds of techniques used with special needs audiences.
Therefore, having only basic training in working with special needs (through my teacher training and experience as a teacher/ tutor) but a desire to work more with these audiences, I approached REPLAY THEATRE. The top company creating work for SEN/ PMLD audiences in Northern Ireland.
It turns out the people at Replay Theatre are absolutely lovely and, having only met me once, agreed to mentor me for the next year - letting me in to watch their shows, supporting me in writing for these audiences and offering me guidance on creating theatre/ performances for audiences with special needs.
I am extrememly grateful and honoured to be given such an opportunity and will use this blog space to report, log and update on everything I am doing during this mentorship. Hopefully by the end of the year, I will have an Inclusive show to tour around Northern Ireland.
